The children of St Mary’s RC Primary in Chepstow are enjoying a chess boom following the supply of free chess sets and support from the Chess In Schools charity. Their after school chess club is only in its second year but school players have already made an impression on the South Wales chess circuit.  Three girls from the school, Rachel McIntosh, Rosie-Cayte Ashwell-Lewis and Chantelle Wynn performed well in the Welsh Girls Championships in January, with Rachel achieving 4th place in the Girls Under-11s.  The school team have played in many events and recently came 9th out of 40 in the Cardiff Schools Championship against teams from Wales and neighbouring English counties.  The pupils’ hard work and success culminated in a very exciting trip to the London Chess Classic at Olympia in December where the team were able to receive coaching from top British players and see some of the best players in the world in action, including their hero, former world champion Vishy Anand.
