ST MARY’S SCHOOL CHESS CLUB
The school Chess Club meets weekly during term on a Friday from 3.30 – 4.30pm.
Chess Club is open / available to Junior Children of all abilities.
The Club is run by Mr John Powell and Mrs Anne Tyson with other help as required.
Chess Club 2014
The School Chess Team attended the Welsh Inter Primary Schools Championships. Overall St Mary’s came sixth out of forty six teams from across South Wales.
Thirteen members of the Chess Club attended the London Chess Classic at Olympia, London. The children met and played against British champion David Howell, had a teaching session with a Grand Master and then played individual age grouped competitive games. There were two hundred children from twenty schools taking part and St Mary’s had the smallest team present. St Mary’s came second overall on points total with several individual section medals as well.
A record number of children from Year 2 upwards took part in the Delancy Chess Challenge (UK-wide individual competition) giving
up weekly Friday lunch breaks to play Competition Level Chess against each other to gain points to reach the next level of the competition. Eight children went through to the Mega-Final in Cardiff, of which four went through to the Giga-Final in Manchester and finally one, having won their age section, went through to the Tera-Final in Loughborough.
The School Chess Team attended the Welsh Primary Schools Team Championships and came a pleasing overall eighth place. The Teams also managed to win a section, resulting in a sizeable cup for the School’s Trophy Cupboard.
Several Chess Club members also entered individual competitions in Wales and Gloucester playing against a wide range of ability and winning individual medals and cups.
One member entered a unique competition producing a short video on the use of a Pawn within Chess and won joint first prize, resulting in an individual prize of £250 to spend personally and £250 for the School Chess Club.
During the course of the year five Chess Club members were chosen to play for Monmouthshire and one was selected to play for Wales.
In July, the Chess Team were very thrilled to be awarded the Mr Mike Gorell Cup for best Team Performance in the year, for the second year running.
